Until 212 CE, when the emperor Caracalla granted all free inhabitants of the Roman Empire citizenship with the Constitutio Antoniniana , few Jews enjoyed the privilege of citizenship. Mainly, Jews became citizens through descent, through manumission by a Roman citizen, or through military service. On rare cases, however, they would be offered citizenship as a personal gift for the services they rendered to a powerful Roman citizen.
